The classification process is a unique and integral part of sports for people with disabilities. The purpose of the classification phase is to ensure fair and equitable competition at all levels of the sport, regardless of individual differences in physical function.

Classification systems have been in use in sport for people with disabilities since the mid-1940s. The first classification systems were based on medical conditions, such as spinal cord injury diagnoses, and were not specific to the functional demands of each sport.

The current system, functional classification, ensure that athletes with alterations or absence of upper and lower limbs have the opportunity to play the sport and that strategies, tactics and athletes are the factors that determine success in the competitions.
